Coast Guard Band Woodwind Quintet Performs at Music Center Northwest

NEW LONDON, Conn.—Saturday April 6th at 7:30 p.m., the Coast Guard Band Woodwind Quintet performs at Music Center of the Northwest. This concert is part of a series of performances and clinics given by the Quintet throughout Washington and Oregon. Offering a brilliant and challenging program, the Coast Guard Band’s commitment to excellence is on display through these superlative players.

The program’s first half features Nina Rota’s “Petite Offrande Musicale,” “Suite Hermética, Op. 95,” by Brazilian composer Liduino Pitombeira, and “Concertante Quintet No. 1, Op. 4, No. 1,” by Giuseppe Cambini. “Dance Suite” by Paul Valjean is in five movements: Gavotte, Sarabande, Tango, Pas de Deux, and Waltz. The final work is John Harbison’s engaging “Quintet for Winds.” Members of the group include Chief Musicians Barret Seals, oboe, Chantal Hovendick, clarinet, and Musicians 1st Class Laura Pirruccello, flute, Bryce Nakaoka, horn, and Sean Maree, bassoon.

One of the Coast Guard Band's most popular and versatile chamber ensembles, The United States Coast Guard Woodwind Quintet often serves as the musical ambassador of the Coast Guard and the Department of Homeland Security for events including cabinet- and Presidential-level ceremonies and functions. Established in 1977, the Quintet presents the entire spectrum of standard woodwind quintet repertoire—from Renaissance works to show tunes, rags, and contemporary works. The Woodwind Quintet has performed at numerous noteworthy events since its inception, including the dedication of Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, D.C., Vice Presidential receptions during the inaugural celebrations for Ronald W. Reagan, ceremonies welcoming foreign ambassadors, concerts at the White House and on Capitol Hill for members of Congress and other high ranking individuals such as the Commandant of the Coast Guard, Coast Guard dinners and receptions, and other government functions. The Quintet further supports the Band’s mission through its educational and community outreach initiative, traveling and performing throughout the country. Highlights include performances and masterclasses at venues such as New England Conservatory, Manhattan School of Music, various OpSail locations and events, nursing homes, elementary and secondary schools, chamber music festivals throughout the United States, clinics, national television audiences, and tour audiences throughout New England and the National Capital Region.

This event is free and open to the public. Tickets are required for this event. For information on free tickets, visit or call (206) 526-8443.
