Beyond the Program Note: Haydn's "Creation"

In partnership with Philharmonia Northwest, Music Center will present the first class of a series called "Beyond the Program Note." The series will consist of one- or two-session classes tied in with the repertoires of upcoming concerts given by local ensembles. Building out from the core repertoire of the concerts, we will explore the musical genres and the cultures that created them through a combination of interactive listening, presentations on history, and perhaps even live performance. If you've ever wanted to understand how the music works and how it came to be, come join us!

Our first class in the series will focus on the centerpiece of Philharmonia Northwest's season finale, Haydn's Creation. This work is one of the most famous examples of the oratorio genre (Handel's Messiah perhaps claiming the top spot). This genre has a rich history that we will explore by hearing the evolution of its musical style from its conception in the 17th century to the great oratorios of Handel that provided Haydn with a model. We will offer the same class twice, once in the morning, Wednesday, April 10th at 10am, and once in the evening, Friday, April 12th at 7pm. Both classes will take place in the Music Together room at Music Center. Admission is free with a $20 suggested donation. No musical background or experience necessary. Philharmonia Northwest will perform Creation with Kirkland Choral Society on Saturday, April 20th.

Justin Henderlight has taught oboe, music history, music theory, and ear training to students of a wide range of ages and abilities. He completed his bachelor’s degree in music education at the University of Washington, during and after which he taught private lessons in North Seattle for several years. He was delighted to watch his students place at the state level of Solo and Ensemble competitions. Afterwards, he entered graduate studies at the University of British Columbia, where he attained a PhD in historical musicology. During the course of his graduate work, Justin taught writing and led academic discussions in music history for undergraduates.

An advocate of new and obscure repertoire, composer and oboist Justin Henderlight has engaged with a wide variety of groups in the Seattle area. As a specialist in writing new music in historical styles, Justin has provided compositions to local ensembles, including Seattle Baroque Orchestra. He has played with such groups as the Federal Way Symphony, Opus 7 vocal ensemble, and the Kirkland Choral Society. Currently, Justin is collaborating with the Saltwater Chamber Music Series, playing oboe and providing new compositions.
