Michael Alstad, Executive Director, Trumpet Faculty, Around the Sound Community Band
Teaching Artist Statement
When you believe in yourself anything is possible. These words have guided my teaching with children and adults. Why? My students are people from all walks of life who are inspired to create a life of musical participation. Success looks different for every student but the process in getting there is the same; setting out goals for improvement and an absolute belief that you will be able to accomplish them. Students discover that the expectations for an exceptional experience rest not in playing every note perfectly, but in feeling satisfied with themselves as they walk off the stage knowing they have done their very best. They learn that persistence, self-control, curiosity, conscientiousness, grit and self-confidence, are the keys to achieving success in music. We learn that character is created by measuring success while encountering and overcoming failure.
Michael Alstad has taught trumpet and directed bands for youth and adults. He has both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in Music Education from Eastern Washington University. His students have received recognition throughout the world for musical accomplishments as soloists and in ensembles.
For the past twenty-five years Michael Alstad has been a believer in community music making a difference in people’s lives. Working with local groups he has shared the stage with internationally renowned guest artists including Maynard Ferguson, Clark Terry, and Lew Soloff among others. While his duties as Executive Director of Music Center of the Northwest occupy most of his time, Michael still finds time to lead Centerpiece, Music Center’s Resident Jazz Ensemble and serve as Musical Director of Around the Sound Community Band.
