Adaptive Music Lessons

Music therapy is the use of music interventions to work on individualized clinical, non-musical goals. Although learning an instrument comes with many additional benefits, adapted lessons have a primarily musical goal: learning an instrument.

  • Who Can Take Adaptive Music Lessons

Music Center offers adapted music lessons to students for whom traditional music lessons may not be the best fit. Adapted music lessons are provided by a music therapist who will adapt musical instruction to the student’s individual needs. Prospective students may register for an assessment with one of our music therapists to find out more and to decide whether traditional or adapted lessons might be the best option.

We offer adaptive instruction for the following instruments:

    Piano
    Flute
    Guitar
    Ukulele
    Voice

  • Getting Started

Adaptive lessons are unique and custom tailored lessons in the instrument of your choice, either in-person or online.

Adaptive lessons can be provided in 25-minutes or 50-minute increments. This is determined by the age and need of each individual. For younger students just beginning their musical journey, we recommend starting with a 25-minute lesson.

Typically, lessons are provided weekly with independent practice completed by the student throughout the week. Families can then register for the remainder of the academic year or smaller packages.

Contact us by filling out our Inquiry Form and one of our staff members will reach out to you about our program.

The Details

Who can participate in adaptive lessons?

Adaptive lessons benefit anyone who loves music and wants to learn an instrument. If you have a strong desire to learn an instrument, but have had difficulty learning in the traditional manner, adaptive lessons are for you. Examples of individuals who may benefit include:

  • Neurodivergent children, teens, and adults

  • Older adults with a background and love for musical instruments with a desire to continue learning who struggle due to loss of skills and abilities

  • Neurotypical children, teens, and adults who struggle with traditional learning methods

  • Persons with musical backgrounds who have experienced an injury requiring relearning of skills

  • Persons who have never learned to read music, but have an ear for music and are eager to learn

Adaptive lessons are a great way for people of all ages to experience musical growth in an individualized and unique learning environment.

What if my student needs to miss an adaptive lesson?

No credits or refunds will be given for client absences (vacation, field trips, school music obligations, sports, illness, etc.). Therapists are NOT required nor obligated to reschedule sessions due to client absence. If you must miss a session (especially for illness) you should stay in contact with your therapist for additional assignments or practice ideas.

What if we need to stop adaptive lessons entirely?

If it is necessary for a student to stop taking adaptive lessons, students/guardians should complete a Withdrawal Form and return it to the office. At the time the office receives the Withdrawal Form, the client is responsible to pay for four (4) more sessions (which they may attend if they choose).
