The Art of Defiance
WITH SANDRA WRIGHT SHEN, PIANO
MICHAEL WHEATLEY, CONDUCTOR
Sunday, October 11, 2026 @ 2:00pm – 4:00pm
Shorecrest Performing Arts Center, Shoreline, WA, United States
$30 ($25 student/senior; ages 17 & under free)
Sandra Wright Shen, piano
Michael Wheatley, conductor
Some of history's greatest music was born from the courage to challenge expectations. Joan Tower's exuberant Made in America, Beethoven's deeply expressive Fourth Piano Concerto with pianist Sandra Wright Shen, and Shostakovich's brilliantly unconventional Ninth Symphony reveal composers who found their own voices by refusing to follow the crowd.
PROGRAM:
Joan Tower – Made in America
Ludwig van Beethoven – Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major, Op. 58
Dmitri Shostakovich – Symphony No. 9 in E-flat major, Op. 70
Note: Paige Roberts Molloy has unfortunately withdrawn from this performance, and will no longer appear on this program. Philharmonia Northwest is grateful and delighted that Sandra Wright Shen has agreed to perform in her place as soloist on Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4.
